Riverside came out on top in this one 72-52.
Riverside had soooo much more talent in this game.
Riccardo Gathers
Cedrick Jenkins
Ed Galina
Lou Dabney
Kyle McClue
And Peanut comes off the freaking bench.
However, Riverside doesn't play very well as a team. The 1st half was like watching an NBA game when they had the ball. Lots of 1-on-1 play and clearouts, and lots of pull up 3s in transition mostly by Cedrick Jenkins. When Jenkins is on he is pretty much unstoppable. But in the 2nd quarter he wasn't hitting his shots.
It was 23-15 Springfield at one point in the 2nd quarter, but 2 quick Galine three-pointers got it back to 23-21. Riverside took a 32-31 lead into the halftime break.
Springfield has a very good team. They had 2 guards who could handle the ball very well, one tall post player (who got a dunk off an alley-oop that brought the house down in the 2nd quarter), and a solid set shooter who spent most of his time hitting 15-footers along the baseline. But still, I felt the talent differential should have led to more than a one point lead at halftime for Riverside.
Oh, and Gathers had one of the sickest dunks I have ever seen in a high school game in the 3rd quarter off of a lob. It was just insane. I would also like to comment on how solid of a player Galina is for Riverside. He is a great shooter, crashes and rebounds very hard, and always keeps the ball moving on offense whether he is reversing the ball at the right time or making a skip pass or driving to the whole. He does everything at the right time and is a very good player. He also never gets emotional on the court and always seems very focused on what he needs to do. Really solid player.
Riverside won't walk to a title like they have in the past when they were at Reserve. They are going to have to work for it in 2A. And they are going to have to play a little better than they did tonight to do it.
